Donations from the McQueeney Lions Club and The Texas A&M Forest Service Allow Purchases Much of Much Needed Equipment

November 27, 2018:  The McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department recently received a donation from the McQueeney Lions Club and a grant for firefighting equipment from the Texas A&M Forest Service Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program and we have begun purchasing new firefighting equipment with these funds.  The first equipment to be purchased was 2 gasoline powered ventilation fans and some hand tools to be used for forcible entry, rescue and other related tasks.  The ventilation fans are replacing two 20 year old fans that are becoming more and more expensive to maintain and the new hand tools will give the fire department more flexibility when operating at fires and other emergencies.  The fire department will be purchasing additional equipment in the next few months as we determine the best way to use the remaining grant funds received from the Texas A&M Forest Service.  Pictured with the new equipment are firefighters Stephen Talavera and Josh Harlow.

November 20, 2018: McQueeney VFD Volunteers Tour McQueeney Elementary School Campus

At their regular training exercise on Monday, November 20, McQueeney VFD volunteers walked the campus of McQueeney Elementary School, becoming familiar with the layout and size, and determining lengths of fire hose required to reach different parts of the campus. A campus map was provided and other important details were noted. Volunteers were advised that the school’s ALICE training designates the Pic-A-Taco parking lot, a short distance down FM725, as the escape location and safe refuge in the event of an active shooter or other such incident. This will probably be the response location for the firefighters.

While there, the school principal extended an open invitation to the firefighters to visit the school anytime to have lunch with the students, read to them, etc.  McQueeney VFD Chief Bogisch strongly encourages a partnership with our local elementary school.

11/15/18: McQueeney VFD Responds to Early Morning Fire in McQueeney Estates

At approximately 2:38 AM today (Nov. 15) the McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a reported structure fire at 328 Pecan Drive SW in McQueeney Estates. We responded with 2 engines and 7 firefighters and when we arrived on scene, we found a double-wide mobile home with smoke coming from the roof and around the doors and windows.  All 7 residents safely evacuated the residence prior to the arrival of the fire department.  

Upon making entry through the front door of the residence we found a sofa destroyed by fire and other fire damage in the living room of the home.  Although the fire damage was limited to the living room, the fire generate large amounts of toxic black smoke which damage or destroyed most of the contents throughout the home.  Since the family of 7 was displaced by the fire, the Red Cross was contacted and is providing help for their immediate needs.

The cause and origin investigation is being done by Guadalupe County Fire Marshal Patrick Pinder and although no official cause is available at this time, the fire appears to be accidental in nature and there were no injuries to firefighters or the residents of the home.  This fire is another reminder of the importance of having working smoke detectors in your home as the residents were awakened by their smoke detector(s) going off so they had enough time to safely evacuate their residence.   

With the onset of cold weather early this year, we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to be very careful with their use of space heaters and make sure they are not placed too close to any combustibles such as curtains, drapes and furniture.  Also, please have your central heating unit checked by a professional as soon as you can.

Large Grass, Brush Fire Along I-10

A large column of smoke billowed high into the sky as flames devoured about 50 acres on Thursday just east of Seguin.

The fire was reported just before noon on Interstate 10 near the 614 mile-marker.

However, dry vegetation, low humidity and winds pushed the fire deep into the brush, Seguin Fire Marshal Greg Dreiss said.

RIP Captain Rosa

I am beyond honored that my fellow ff and I were able to come pay our respects to our brother. The amount of personal out here was amazing. Not just fd. Pd came in full force too. There is no doubt we lost one of the best. It’s never easy to explain to people why things like this mean so much to us and why our hearts hurt when we have lost another. We don’t have to know each other personally in this field to know we are all family or care about each other. The overwhelming gratitude that we have received from long beach fd and other local California fd’s really puts things into perspective. They are very appreciative of the firefighters who have traveled to be here but it feels like we should be the one thanking them. They invited us to celebrate a brothers life. I will forever remember the stories that were shared and the legacy that Captain Rosa left behind. Many people were blessed to be involved with such a great guy and have forever been changed by this. But like always every firefighter will get back on that truck and do their job without hesitation to continue to honor our brother. R.I.P. Captain Rosa.

#UPDATE: The fire is out and the RV was destroyed, but Blakes was saved, however, the restaurant may be closed for the remainder of the night due to the loss of electricity. No injuries were reported.

#BREAKING: McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department and the Seguin Fire Department are working to extinguish a fire that destroyed an RV behind Blake’s Cafe -McQueeney. We’ll post more information as it becomes available.
