McQueeney VFD Mourns Loss of Firefighter

Maria “Wally” Herrera-Hernandez

August 29, 1962 – August 25, 2019

Maria “Wally” Herrera-Hernandez of Seguin, Texas entered into eternal rest on Sunday, August 25, 2019 at the age of 56. She was born on August 29, 1962 in San Antonio, Texas to Victor G. Herrera and Maria Trinidad-Pais.

Maria is preceded in death by her son, Javier Enrique Ramirez; daughter, Carolina Christina Ramirez; brother, Daniel Herrera; maternal grandparents, Inez and Carolina Ramos and paternal grandparents, Ernesto and Victoria Herrera.

She is survived by her father, Victor G. Herrera; mother, Maria Trinidad-Pais and step father, William Pais; son, Joe Angel Hernandez; grandchildren, Kalanie Hernandez and Joe Anthony Hernandez; siblings, Victor G. Herrera II, Ernesto Inez Herrera, Marisella Patriz Luna and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Maria was a loving, fun and caring spirit. She was very intelligent, creative and artistic. She was always willing to help anyone in need and would give the shirt off her back. So much so that she spent time volunteering at the McQueeney Fire Department as well as for the Blue Santa with the San Antonio Police Department. Maria was known for her protective nature, she was 4’11 and three quarters but was a force to be reckoned with. She was known for always protecting her family especially her brothers. She was also an avid shopper at the Dollar Tree and Dollar General, if it was within a 30 mile radius of her home you could find her shopping in it. Maria will be deeply missed by her family and all of those lives she touched. The Dollar Tree and Dollar General have also lost their #1 customer.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by reciting of the rosary at 10:30 a.m. Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. and funeral services will conclude at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family asks to make donations to The McQueeney Fire Department.

McQueeney VFD Sponsors Mastering Fire Ground Command–Calm the Chaos Class

On August 24th and 25th the McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department sponsored a Mastering Fire Ground Command–Calm the Chaos class. Participants included firefighters from Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, as well as all parts of Texas. The instructors were from California. Participants recieved both classroom and hands on training at the Guadalupe County Fire Training Facility.

McQueeney VFD Firefighters Respond to Fallen Tree Incident In McQueeney 7/28/19

At 6:30pm on Sunday July 28th McQueeney Fire Department was dispatched for an incident on FM725 @ Old San Antonio Road where a large tree broke and came down on the roadway, striking a couple on a CanAm 3 Wheeled Motorbike and also striking another passing vehicle. 

 
The department responded with 8 firefighters, 1 Command Unit, 1 Rescue Truck, and multiple POV units. Upon arrival responders found FM725 blocked in both directions just north of Old San Antonio Road and that the occupants of the motorbike had been able to escape the tree collapse with minor injuries and had managed to remove themselves from the downed tree with assistance of bystanders and neighbors. McQueeney VFD medical personnel began patient assessments and initial treatment while other firefighters, assisted by Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Deputies shut down the roadway and established traffic control diverting traffic away from the scene. 
 
Seguin EMS paramedics arrived and transported the passenger and driver of the motorbike to an area hospital to receive treatment for their injuries and to be checked out further. Texas Department of Transportation crews were called in to clear and remove the tree and assist with reopening the roadway. 
 
Agencies on scene included McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department, Seguin EMS, Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, and Texas Department of Transportation. All units were clear of the scene and the roadway was reopened at 10:30 pm.
 

Responding agencies would like to thank area motorists for their patience and understanding with the detours while the road was closed for such an extended period of time.

McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department Responds to Accident on Woodlake Dr.

At 3:25pm on Saturday July 20th, McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a single vehicle accident on Woodlake Drive. The department responded with 4 firefighters, 1 rescue truck, and 1 engine. Upon arrival, volunteers found a single vehicle that had run off the roadway and struck a tree in the front yard of a home. The driver was out of the vehicle and appeared uninjured, however the vehicle was heavily damaged.  McQueeney Fire Department medical personnel began patient evaluation.  Seguin EMS responded as well and after evaluation obtained a medical refusal from the driver who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. This was the second MVA in that immediate area in as many days, the first being much less severe in nature. The fire department would like to remind drivers to be safe while operating a motor vehicle as we have seen a high number of MVAs in our area already this year, several of which have been quite serious. Agencies responding to this incident included McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department, Seguin EMS, Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, and TXDPS Highway Patrol.

McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department Responds to Wreck at Klien Rd. and FM 1044

At 6:49 PM on Thursday July 18 McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to assist Marion Fire Department with a major 2 vehicle accident with a confirmed entrapment at FM 1044 & Klein Road. McQueeney VFD responded with 1 rescue truck and 5 firefighters. Once on scene McQueeney firefighters extricated the trapped victim with the use of hydraulic rescue tools by removing the entire driver side of the vehicle. Once free from the vehicle, the occupant was turned over to Schertz EMS paramedics who were already on scene. The occupant was then transported to an area hospital by Schertz EMS to receive medical attention for his injuries. Agencies on scene included the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, TXDPS Highway Patrol, Marion Fire Department, McQueeney Volunteer Fire Dept, and Schertz EMS.

Wreck at Intersection of FM78 and FM725 Injures Two

At 4:58pm on 7/11/19 McQueeney VFD was dispatched for a 2 vehicle MVA at the intersection of FM725 & FM78. Volunteers arrived to find the westbound lanes of FM78 blocked as well as the intersection. McQueeney VFD responded with 1 Rescue Truck, several POVs, and 8 firefighters. Upon assessment it was determined there were 2 patients, one from each vehicle. McQueeney VFD and Seguin EMS medical personnel evaluated the patients and 1 patient was transported in stable condition for minor injuries by Seguin EMS, while the other signed a medical refusal. The McQueeney VFD firefighters remained on scene assisting Guadalupe County Sheriffs Office Deputies, Precinct 4 Constables, and TXDPS Troopers with traffic control until wreckers were able to remove both vehicles and reopen the roadway. 
 
 
  
 
 

McQueeney VFD Responds to Vehicle Rollover on Shortcut Rd.

At 2:15 pm on 6/28/19 McQueeney VFD was dispatched for a rollover single vehicle MVA with entrapment on Shortcut Road.  One rescue truck and 6 McQueeney VFD personnel responded. Due to the nature of the call, mutual aid from our neighbors at Marion Fire Dept was immediately requested. Marion immediately responded with 2 additional personnel and an additional rescue truck.
 
Responders to the scene found a small pickup truck resting on its side. Two of the three occupants had self extricated and were outside the vehicle, the 3rd was still inside lying in a precarious position. The decision was made to separate the roof of the truck from the vehicle for better access to the patient. Two medic units from Seguin Fire Dept and one medic unit from Schertz EMS transported all 3 occupants to area trauma centers for a variety of injuries. 
 
Responding agencies included Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department Of Public Safety Highway Patrol, McQueeney Fire Dept, Marion Fire Dept, Schertz EMS, and Seguin Fire Dept. Excellent work was done by all agencies involved.

McQueeney VFD Responds to Fire on Lakeside Pass

On June 26th at 2:15 pm McQueeney Fire Dept was dispatched to assist Lake Dunlap with a structure fire on Lakeside Pass off of FM725. Volunteers responded with 1 engine and 8 personnel.  Responders found a working structure fire of a single family residence. The Lake Dunlap VFD incident commander requested additional manpower and resources.  Marion Fire Dept, Seguin Fire Dept, Schertz Fire Dept, and New Braunfels Fire Dept all responded with additional engines. Schertz EMS also responded with a medic unit and a rehab bus. The fire was extinguished and all McQueeney units were clear of scene by 8:30pm that evening.
